Of the 39 stallions credited with $lO,OOO or more in stakes last season, only 21 are still available to breeders in this country, and a number of them are either fully booked or doing very restricted season’s because of age. Johnny Globe, now 25, is not being used at the stud, while Bachelor Hanover is 19, Fallacy and Garrison Hanover are bo’th 24, and Lumber Dream 14. All of these horses are fully booked, several of them not only for this spring. However, the oldest horse being used extensively at the stud is Young Charles, now aged 26. This old horse, sire of last season’s top two-year-old, Young Quinn, did a big season last spring and he obtained a high percentage of positive tests. Van Dieman is the same age, but he has been retired.

Armbro Del, a 12-year-old, did best of the "four, finishing fifteenth with $34,454, the result of 26 wins and 67 placings by his two and three-year-olds.

Eight places further down the list came Scottish Hanover with 14 wins, 49 placings and $22,865.

Tuft finished thirtieth with $14,507, the result of 17 wins and 36 placings. Good Chase, which was represented by only one very small crop of foals, finished thirty-fifth with seven wins and nine placings worth $11,395.

While there are still many sires to be represented for a first time on the tracks, it could be some time yet before it is clear

Another oldtimer is Court Martial, which is 25, while Forward is a year younger.

Local Light, Nephew Hal, Newport Chief and Larnie Scott are all 22, two years older than Great Evander, Ricochet and Robert Dillon, which has been returned south.

At 19 years are Scottish Command, Gentry and Van Hanover, while Winterlight is 16, and Lordship, at 14, Scottish Hanover, at 13, Armbro Del. at 12, and Tuft, at 11. are mere youngsters. The youngest by far is Good Chase, at eight. He is due to return to New Zealand in time for the 1973 breeding season. Among the stallions expected to be represented in two-year-old events for the first time this season are Armbro Hurricane, sire of a winner at the recent Washdyke trials, Jerry Adios, Key Club, Majestic Chance, Meadow Al, Out to Win, Pacific Hanover and Tarport Prince.

The stallions with yearlings as their first crops include Brad Hanover, Butler Byrd, Creed Widower, Culver Pick, Frosty Dream, Keystone Way, Limongelli, Lopez Hanover, Mark Lobel, Nevele Holiday, Perfecto Hanover, Poplar Del, Regal Yankee, Scotch Abbe, Sly Yankee and Truant Hanover.

In addition, there are quite a number of stallions who will have their first crops of foals arriving in the next few weeks. They include Able Byebve, Count Scott, Crocket, Far Heel (now in Australia), Scrappy Wave, Smooth Hanover, Tarport Coulter, and Tudor Hanover. Bay Foyle, too, will have an odd foal this season.
