Primeval and others in U.S.

TT is now almost 20 years since the first New Zea-land-bred mare went to the United States. This was Primeval (Springfield GlobeFirst Issue), which was first bred from in 1955. She was sent over by Mr N. Simpson, now of Sydney, but has been only moderately successful. She has left seven winners, her best being Thorpe R., which took a record of 2:4 4-5. He is now a five-year-old. The second mare to go was Shooting Star (Dillon Hall-Polka Dot). She had her first foal in 1956 and has left four winners, including Freda S. (2:4 4-5) and Wild Chance (2:4 3-5). Quite a number of mares have gone over in more recent times and have already been represented by winners. Ordeal (Light BrigadeArizona), the only twominute trotter bred in New Zealand, left a recent Four-year-old winner in Speedy Message (by Speedster), but he favours the pacing gait. The 12-month-long wrangle over Ordeal and her other foal, Speedy Reply, also by Speedster, continues. However, it is be-

lieved unlikely that Ordeal will ever have another foal. Her daughter should be of tremendous value at the stud if she can be registered. Maggie Spangler (Meadow Chief-Special Attack) has two of her progeny racing with success. My Pride, a three-year-old by Grentree Adios, has been a winner on major New York tracks, and not so long ago the colt won a $5OOO race in 2:3 at Roosevelt Raceway, following on a win in 2:3 1-5 in a $3250 race at Yonkers. Turn On, a four-year-old brother of My Pride, won in 2:3 at Yonkers last year and recently won a $4OOO race at Roosevelt in 2:3 4-5 Import Mimbar, the first foal of Julie Hanover (Garrison Hanover-Spangled Brigade) has been successful in a two-year-old event at Roosevelt. He is by Greentree Adios and has a big reputation. Very Fair (AmortizerHighland Flirt) has been a useful winner. Her dam was got by Light Brigade from Highland May, a sister of Highland Fling. She was bred from by the American trainer, E. Cobb, but luck

was against him, and she finished up in South Canterbury. Very Fair took a record of 2:4 3-5 early in the year on a slowish track, while her older sister, Fair Flirt, won in 2:5 3-5.
