3700 foals bred
The number of standardbred mares being bred from has doubled in seven years and there is no sign of the upsurge diminishing. It is expected that the number of mares put to the horse in 1971-72 will total more than 3700, a few returns still being outstanding with the New Zealand Trotting Conference. The last complete season was 1970-71, when 3539 mares were put to stallions. A few returns have not yet been received, but the number of foals produced is expected to be 2400. The number of mares being bred from has increased in spectacular fashion since the total reached 1788 in 1964-65, and is is thought likely that the number will reach 4000 this season.
