Export of delicacies
Sir, —I believe that it is time that the Government of New Zealand gave some consideration to the desires of its citizens. It was recently reported by Dr P. M. Hine, of the Marine Department, that there were not sufficient densities of prawns for a commercial operation here. In view of this, how can the Government justify the ban on importing green or frozen prawns from Australia? You cannot buy canned toheroa soup here; nor is toheroa soup available in hotels; but you can be served genuine New Zealand toheroa soup in hotels in Sydney. It is difficult to find crayfish in Christchurch shops without a good deal of going from one shop to another, even if one is willing to pay a dear price. You cannot buy pheasant here, either, although they are exported. The Government export craze is supplying people of other countries with products at the expense of New Zealanders.—Yours, etc., HUNGRY. May 16, 1972.
