Radioactive rainwater
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)
ADELAIDE, July 17. Rainwater collected in the Adelaide hills last week showed an increased level of radioactivity, the South Australian Minister of Works (Mr James Corcoran) said today. He said that a reading of 130 picocuries per litre was obtained from samples collected at Aidgate last Friday. This compared with readings of 46, 14. and 10 picocuries in samples taken on the previous three days. Mr Corcoran said the increased radioactivity level of rainwater tended to confirm that a nuclear device was detonated by France in the southern hemisphere last month.
Although the radioactivity level of rainwater was increasing it was still low and there was no cause for alarm, the Minister said. Tests would continue.
The World Health Organisation limit for safe drinking water was 1000 picocuries per litre.
