COMPUTER EXPORT

System sold to Britain

(N.Z Press Association>

WELLINGTON, July 12.

A computer system for drawing up school timetables will be exported to British schools by a Lower Hutt computer software company. The company, Systems and Programs (N.Z.), Ltd, said today that the system, used initially by four British education authorities, was selected over systems developed by Canada, Norway and Britain.

The general manager (Mr P. W. Harpham) said the order was thought to be the first export by a New Zealand firm of a fully-developed computer system. The system, which took more than four years to develop, will be used in the first British schools by October. The New Zealand Education Department is studying the possible use of the computer system. If the department adopted the scheme nationally for State secondary schools it would cost nearly $500,000 a year. The Director of Secondary Education (Mr M. Hewitson) said today that the system was in use in a few Wellington schools.
