Scientists visit Cuba

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) SAN CLEMENTE California), July 12. The Government has disclosed that an official United States delegation had visited Cuba for the first time since Washington severed relations with Havana in 1961. But the Presidential press secretary, Mr Ronald Ziegler, said that the presence of four scientists in Cuba last month was without political significance and represented no change in United States policy towards the island. The four scientists were in Cuba from June 19 to June 24 to take part in an international conference sponsored by the United Nations on investigation of natural resources in the Caribbean. Mr Ziegler said it was not necessary for the scientists to obtain White House approval of the visit. He said that the Government does not ban travel to Cuba for scientific meetings and does not prevent Cubans from visiting the United States for the same purpose.
