Swimmers in full training

Canterbury’s two schoolgirl Olympic swimmers. Misses S. J. I lunter and J. M. Parkhouse, have stopped attending school for the present and are concentrating on their build-ups for the < iames in Munich.

Parkhouse), who is also J the coach of the Munich * team, said yesterday that Treffers was covering about J 55 miles a week in training . and Misses Hunter and Parkhouse between 46 and 48 miles. . Time trials ; On July 23 they will swim ' time trials at the Wharenui ’ pool and Mr Parkhouse is { confident each will break a ( national short-course record. “All three are in good condition: I haven’t been so confident about them breaking a record before,” he said. McConnochie will swim the 400-metre and 200-metre individual medleys, Treffers the 400-metre freestyle. Miss Coombridge the ItlO-metre and 200-metre freestyle, Miss Hunter a 200 metre individual medley and 200-metre backstroke and Miss Parkhouse a 400-metre freestyle and possible a 200metre freestyle. Mr Parkhouse and the three Canterbury swimmers, all members of the Wharenui club, were bidden farewell at a function at the club < rooms last evening. Mr Parkhouse was presented with a briefcase. Treffers with a travelling umbrella and Misses Hunter and Parkhouse with suitcases. The presentations were made bv the club president, Mr D W. Cain.
