SHIPPING NEWS

Long time away from home ports

The Bank Line's 8530-ton Springbank is homeward bound to Britain for the first time in two years. At Lyttelton she is loading wool, pelts, casings, sheepskins, and nearly 16,000 bags of seed (peas, rye grass, clover). Most of this is for Hull.

The Springbank will complete loading at Napier and Auckland, and will discharge at Dunkirk, Flushing. Antwerp, Rotterdam, Hull, Bremen and Hamburg, in that order. She is under charter to the Shaw Savill Line.

The Bank Line, founded in 1885 by an energetic Scot named Andrew Weir (later Lord Inverforth) normally trades far away from Britain. A trip home was once considered something special, because all victualling and repairing was normally done in ports abroad. Today, it is the company’s policy to bring ships of its fleet home occasionally for inspection, and a few ships run home regularly. The officers of the Springbank are delighted at being homeward bound. However, they are flown home on regular leave every six months, from anywhere in the world. The Asian, crew (in this instance Indians! have leave every year, after a contract. „ The officers are mainly European (English, Scottish, and one Australian). The chief engineer, (Mr Clarence Paul Carvalho, who was born in Calcutta of Goanese parents, lives at Bangalore (Mvsore). Aged 40, and married with one child, Mr Carvalho has been 14 vears with the Bank Line. He described Bangalore as a picturesque, tree-lined city at good altitude, and popular with visitors, because of the climate.'

Tile Northern Steam Ship Company’s motor vessel Dido, which has been delayed at Lyttelton since Monday because of a crew shortage, obtained two seamen yesterdav and sailed for Auckland with her bulk wheat cargo yesterday afternoon. According to the South Island secretary of the Seamen’s Union (Mr T. Stuart), some union members were concerned about the lack of progress in negotiations on their claims for extra leave when serving in vessels with sub-standard accommodation. This might have some bearing on seamen’s reluctance to offer themselves for some vessels, he said. However, he did not specifically mention the Dido. « * * ARRIVALS Rangatira, (6.52 a.m.). 9387, Capt. J. D. Cleaver, Wellington (U S.S.). Holmlea, (10.6 a.m.), 1106, Capt. D.
