Improved basketball by Rex

Checkers remained at the top of the A grade women’s basketball competition at Cowles Stadium last evening, but received a thorough testing from an energetic Rex team, which is well down the points ladder. Mai reh au, the second team, beat United by an unexpected margin and University encountered only token resistance from a disappointing Rangiora team Rebels beat Y.M.C.A. in the final fixture, which was always in the balance. Only two points separated them three minutes from the finish. Points.—Checkers 26, Mairehau 22, United 16, Brighton 12, Rangiora 8. Rex 8, Rebels 8, University 8, Y.M.C.A. 4.

CHECKERS A 58: J. Baker 19, J. Douglas 15, J. Watts 13, D. Beaumont 7, S. Constable 2, M. Dyhrberg 2. REX A 47: B. Thompson 17, D. Ward 9, K. Ray 7, L. Carswell 6, L. Uren 4. D. WhittweU 2, C. Belcher 2. The much improved display of Rex A against the leading team, Checkers A, was a feature of the night. Checkers had trouble finding its combinations, as Rex employed a strong zone defence.

However, the experienced J. Baker always proved a constant menace to Rex and she scored a series of baskets when they were most needed. J. Douglas supported her well on attack. B. Thompson led the spirited Rex attack and K. Ray made some good takes under the basket. But the rebounding was a weak part of Rex’s game.

MAIREHAU A 72: J. Armstrong 22 L. Elliott 15, L. Brodrer 12, P. Hinkley 7, K. Adamson 6. P. Johnston 5, A. van Hoppen 4, S. Thompson 1. UNITED A 33: D. Shearer 11, P. Ruwhiu 8, E. Young 6, L. Wilson 2, J. Clarkson 2, J. Partridge 2, M. Wah 1, S. McKenna 1.

Mairehau was too fit and fast for United, and its prolificscoring captain, J. Armstrong, was able to have several spells off the court without affecting the co-ordinated play of her team.

The United players tended to lose their markers and passed too slowly and wildly to threaten Mairehau’* defence. Armstrong and L. Elliott were Mairehau’s most affective attackers, and A. van Hoppen was a proficient guard.

UNIERSITY A 52: J. Harley 18, J Eyles 11, K. Maxwell 10, L. Bryant 6, J. Boyd 6, A. Sweeney 2. RANGIORA A 38: M Alabaster 25, L. Rollison 6, M. Rodgers 5, A. Howse 2. REBELS A 47: D. Wyness 18, S Graham 12, K. Gosney 7, S. I Clarke 6, K. Woodgate 4,1 P. Davison 2. Y.M.C.A. A 41: K. Harliwlch 12,1 J. Brierley 17, S. Le Warne I 6, A. Robinson 4, S. Eggleton 2.
