‘White South Africans’ fear’

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SYDNEY, July 12.

White South Africans lived in a state of fear and uncertainty, a leading black African churchman said in Sydney today. Canon Burgess Carr, the general secretary of the AllAfrica Conference of Churches, told reporters: “We must understand the position and suffering of the whites, the fear and uncertainty they live in . . . They live in a greater state of fear than the blacks. “The blacks, now, their situation is one of perhaps a higher degree of hopelessness, but the whites must feel more insecure because they have so much more to lose.

“I fly over the country and see the whites’ nice houses—nearly every one of them has a swimming pool. But I wonder, with the present situation in South Africa, how they enjoy life, and how they sleep at night. “They are afraid to think or say anything that could endanger their freedom or prosperity. It is a miserable condition for any human being to live in.”
