Oaro dosing strip

Sir, —After reading “Oaro Ratepayer’s” letter I feel I must voice my disapproval of the siting of a dog dosing strip close to the local school. Whose brainwave was this? We are assured by the County Clerk that the site is “hygienically clean.” This may be so. although I wondet if the local health inspector would agree with this, bearing in mind that the source of the school’s drinking water is only 20 feet from the strip. But is it desirable to subject the children to the sight of 50 dogs purging outside the school fence and the accompanying noise and distraction of a congregation of dogs and farmers? It would also be interesting to hear some sound reasons why the re-siting of the local strip was necessary in the first place.—Yours, etc., OAROITE. July 6, 1972. [Mr A. E. Amyes, County Clerk of the Kaikoura County Council, replies: (1) Contin-

ued availability of the old strip was doubtful. New site is central and of a satisfactory standard; (2) the Oaro school committee was consulted and subject to the area being fenced and dogs kept away from the school grounds, accepted the proposal; (3) the strip is 60 feet away from the school water supply, and with a concrete base, all drainage is down hill 1| chains away from the water supply, and to the satisfaction of the health inspector; (4) after the completion of the first dosing on July 11, it was agreed that no distraction was caused to the children; (5) the concrete base can be easily cleaned and we consider it to be the best strip in the county, but few strips can be sited away from human activity.”]
