Two pipers release record

Two Christchurch pipers —William Boyle (right in the photograph) and Gordon Ogilvie—have recorded a 45 r.p.m. record which will be released in Britain in the next two weeks.

On the record, which was taped in the St Andrew’s College chapel, Mr Boyle plays the bagpipes and and Mr Ogilvie the chapel’s pipe organ. The record will be released in Britain by the Decca Record. Company,. Ltd, London, by arrangement with Hoghton Hughes Enterprises which will release the record in New Zealand through its Master Records division.

“The Piper’s Prayer”—the main track on the record—is a Gaelic air which was adapted by the well-known British piper, Donald Mcleod. The director of Hoghton Hughes Enterprises (Mr H. Hughes) said the record would be the first from New Zealand to be released in Britain. If it was successful there it would be released throughout the world.

The record was sent to record companies after the success of “Amazing Grace,” by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, and a “wildly enthusiastic” reply was received from the Decca company, he said. Mr Boyle had other records distributed in America Canada and Australia, Mr Hughes said.
