Deficit on incidentals grant at Shirley B.H.S.
More than $2600 of nonGovernment money had to be paid by Shirley Boys* High School to cover the deficit on the Government incidentals grant, the school’s headmaster (Mr M. K. Denholm) told the board of governors in his report this week.
Regular increases in the grant had been absorbed by items with high labour costs, Mr Denholm said. This had left the sum available for essential class materials at $6525, less than had been available in 1970, when costs had been lower.
The board’s secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan) said that the national executive meeting of the New Zealand Secondary School Boards’ Association
had applied to the Government for an increased incidentals grant, which the association hoped would come into operation next year.
The association had also appointed a representative to examine the complete revision of Hie grant, together with an officer of the Department of Education.
“I also imagine that this would be tied up with the introduction of the employment regulations in which the association recommended that
the department accept the responsibility of paying office
salaries, and that they should be taken out of the incidentals grant altogether,” said Mr Halligan. “But the department has found it has no staff available for the review, and so the matter has been postponed until later this year,” he said. “The matter is a very live one, exercising a fair amount of attention, but we don’t seem to be getting anywhere very fast,” Mr Halligan said.
