Estuary plans
Surprise at the recent statement of the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr N. G. Pickering) suggesting a lack of co-operation between the City Council and the Drainage Board on Estuary proposals was expressed by the board’s chairman (Mr M. R. Carter) yesterday.
"I would remind the Mayor that it is only about a month ago that he refused to attend a meeting of persons interested in the Estuary if the Drainage Board was to be represented,” Mr Carter said. It had been suggested that the board was keeping quiet about a meeting to discuss over-all improvements to the Estuary, but the suggestion at the meeting was that proposals by the council would be submitted to the board,
’ Mr Carter said. It was still i waiting for them. > He was also surprised that as a city councillor he had no knowledge of what imi provements the council was i proposing, and he knew of other councillors who were similarly in the dark. The board was vitally con- ; cemed with the Estuary con- . trol, and it had always said i that while its major interest i was relief from flooding it ■ had realised that there were I ecological problems as well , as engineering ones.
