Embassy in Chile
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 6. The New Zealand Government will open an embassy in Santiago, Chile, later this year, the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Sir Keith Holyoake) said in a statement today. Sir Keith Holyoake said that the Government had decided to establish diplomatic representation in Latin America and had as a first step obtained the agreement of the Government of Chile co the setting up of this embassy. The Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Taiboys), who would be visiting Peru as well as Chile in the course of his attendance at the United Nations conference on trade and development, would take the opportunity to discuss implementation of the Government’s plans for representation in Latin America. "In the last three years large and promising markets for our dairy produce have opened up in Chile and Peru. Four years ago New Zealand’s exports to the whole of Latin America were worth about $5 million. In 1971 dairy exports to Peru and Chile alone were worth about $2O million and the figure is expected to rise further this year.” Sir Keith Holyoake said that these two markets now took about 10 per cent of New Zealand’s exports of dairy products.
