$460 top price at antique sale
An early Victorian mirror back sideboard, 7ft long, fetched top price of $460 at an auction of antiques, silver, books, ceramics, paintings and jewellery, held at the Kaiapoi premises of R. G. Bell and Co. yesterday.
Other furniture figures included a Victorian walnut chaise-longue ($290), 1830 Spanish mahogany sideboard ($265), burr walnut inlaid 100 table ($275), Victorian lady’s work table with tooled leather top ($360), inlaid walnut 100 dining table ($350), burr walnut whatnot ($250), French folding supper table ($260), Georgian writing desk ($260). A J. C. Hoyte water colour “South Island Lake” reached $3OO after keen bidding and an oil “Waterfall, George Sound” by J. M. Madden in 1906, fetched $lOO. One of the most popular items was a copy in excel-
lent condition of the Canterbury volume of Cyclopedia of New Zealand and bidding finally stopped at $B5, but a Manawatu volume only reached $lB.
A 3?in-high greenstone hei tiki was sold for $260 subject to the owner’s consent. A Napoleonic silver button showing the original owner’s emblem of a bee. reached $l6. Other prices were $93 for a Chinese porcelain vase 18in-high, $95 for a Victorian mechanical doll, $l5O for a Royal Worcester lOin-high vase, $l2O for a pair of Lalique birds, $9O for a sterling silver Birmingham teapot 1910, $l4 for a 1907 gold sovereign, $45 for a gold muff chain, and $3O for one silver serving spoon, made by W. Sutton in London, 1795.
