“Cromwell safe”

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Mar. 29. Cromwell township would not be inundated by any Clutha River dam project, said the Minister of Electricity (Mr Gandar) today. Commenting on the report on hydro-electric power developments on the Clutha, Mr Gandar said: “I will not agree to the high dam proposals because the dam will displace too many people and have too much effect on the Clutha valley environment generally. “Clutha people can be assured that the high dam will not be built by this Government.” Mr Gandar said his personal preference was for scheme “D” which provided for a low dam. This was because it would take the least amount of class I land, and only a small amount of land would be flooded. “We are thinking in terms of 15 to 18 years for the completion of the scheme," Mr Gandar added, “so this should give ample time for the relocation of orchards and crops affected.
