EASTER TRAFFIC 21 killed last year
flfj. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 29. Over the four days of the Easter holiday weekend last year, traffic accidents cost 21 lives and another 390 people were injured, said the Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) today. “Almost 90 per cent of these casualties were drivers and passengers in cars. “This was a tragic period on our roads—that so many people should suffer in so short a time is shocking. That so many drivers and passengers should suffer, when the simple act of fastening a seat belt might have saved them is appalling,” said Mr Gordon. “I appeal to all road users to think of their obligations on the roads this Easter. A heavy road toll can be avoided, but the people who can stop it are those who use the roads. “This means thinking the consequences before you step off the kerb or press the accelerator. Most of all, the occupants of cars must think of the consequences of other people’s action, and fasten their seat belts as soon as they get into their vehicles.”
