MILITARY SERVICE

Activity on Anzac Day and a picket of the Labour Department office were among the matters planned at the first public meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Organisation to Halt Military Service this week, according to a supplied report. Sixty-five persons from more than 10 organisations were addressed by the national chairman (Mr R. Reid) and Mr M. Horton. Mr Reid spoke about the organisation's plans and activities throughout the country and Mr Horton gave an account of similar groups dating back to 1913. The meeting decided to mount an extensive publicity and information campaign to acquaint New Zealanders with the nature of the National Military Service Act. A committee of six was elected, with Mr B. Newman as Christchurch area officer.
