Chch “without character”

Christchurch was a fine city, but it was without character, tangible identity, or physical symbol of its citizens* ambitions, said Mr J. A. Martin, president of the Christchurch Beautifying Association, at the annual presentation of prizes held last evening. “We could perhaps create an identity by returning to the natural condition of the plains and make this a real city in a garden,” he said.

Mr W. R. Dailey, patron of the associaiton, congratulated those receiving cups and certificates, and urged all gardeners to prepare for the giant competition being organised for the Commonwealth Games yearThe street competition, he said, was valuable to Christchurch, and that the winning streets had given great pleasure not only to the citizens of Christchurch, but also to many thousands of visitors. The Mayoress (Mrs Pickering) presented the cups and certificates.
