Fuji free of ice
The Japanese ice-breaker Fuji has broken clear of the Antarctic ice and is now steaming for Cape Town. The Fuji broke free late on Tuesday after being trapped in pack ice off the Prince CHav eoast of Antarctica for more than 19 days. The United States Navy ice-breakers Northwind and Southwind, which were heading south to help rescue the Fuji, have been recalled. The Northwind left Lyttelton 10 days ago with large supplies of fuel and provisions. She was well south of Campbell Island last night when told that the Fuji was free. United States Navy Antarctic support force headquarters in Christchurch said yesterday that the Fuji broke out of the ice at 5.40 pjn. on Tuesday after being buffeted by a blizzard and winds of up to 70 knots. The severe weather is thought to have opened up huge cracks in the pack ice which enabled the Fuji to get through.
