SEALING OF HIGHWAY
5| miles to be done
The Ministry of Works hopes to have State highway No. 73 between Christchurch and Arthur’s Pass sealed within two years. The resident engineer (Mr W. A. Scott) said yesterday that a further one mile and a half of seal had just been completed and the remaining five miles and a half might be done by 1974. Progress on the rest depended on determining where the new Thomas River and Broken River crossings would be located. It would be possible to seal more of the road now if the sites of the bridges were known but these were being determined in Wellington. The Ministry is making an intensive study of the unsealed stretch to decide how to eliminate some difficult shady sections which give constant trouble to motorists. Beyond Arthur’s Pass only three or four miles of the highway have yet to be sealed. State highway No. 73 links with State highway No. 6 at Kumara Junction.
