Motor Show
Sir,—Yesterday, when visit, ing the motor show at Canterbury Court, I went to park in the car park, only to be stopped and informed that the charge was 20c, a fact which the notice bn view from the street had not revealed. I was informed that the proceeds were going to
charity. Upon backing out and saving my money, I discovered that street parking was actually closer to the main entrance. I wonder how many people “compulsorily donated” and then discovered this? I visited car shows and other displays on Saturday nights last year and parking was free. I realise that lots of organisations like to keep their names in the public eye by collecting for charity, but why not give value for money? Mow lawns for a dollar, bob-a-job; the opportunities are unlimited. Or are we getting afraid of hard work?—Yours, ARCHAIC. February 18, 1972. [The Vintage Car Club, which sponsored the show, has not replied to an invitation to comment on this letter.]
