Fuji still trapped

The Japanese ice-breaker Fuji, which was to have tried to break out of Antarctic fast ice on Tuesday, yesterday was in the same position off the Queen Maude Land coast that she had been in for

three days. A helicopter survey by the Fuji indicated that ice conditions were unchanged; the weather in the area was cloudy with winds of up to 26 knots.

A report from the Fuji received at the United States Navy Antarctic support force headquarters in Christchurch yesterday said that a Russian aircraft reported to the Japanese ice-breaker that pack ice extended about 30

miles, but that cracks were seen 20 miles north of the Fuji.
