1971 surplus a record (N.Z. Press Attn —Copyright; LONDON, Mar. 8. Britain had a record bal-ance-of-payments surplus of about £9som at the end of last year, her trading account with the rest of the world during the fourth quarter of 1971 having been in surplus by nearly £2som. The record surplus for the year was nearly £3som more than in 1970.
The total currency inflow during 1971 was £3228m, nearly £2ooom more than in 1970. Investment and other capital inflow accounted for £l3oom of the increase. In addition, £l2sm was taken into the reserve on January 1, as part of Britain’s share of the second allocation of Special Drawing Rights, or so-called “paper gold".
