Brood mare trophy
An added attraction at the Mayfield Agricultural and Pastoral Show on Saturday will be a trophy for what is believed to be the first competition of its kind in brood mare class events in New Zealand. The cup, the Who Dat Memorial Challenge Cup, has been presented by Mrs W. C. Quantock, of “Chaparell,” Ealing, in memory of her pony brood mare Who Dat. The cup, which will be presented annually, will be awarded to the pony which is in the opinion of the judges the true type of pony brood mare most suitable for breeding ponies. Who Dat was a chestnut, 12.2 hands, by the Lilley Brothers hackney stallion Star Spit, out of a little
mare from the Mt Somers Station. She was shown once under saddle, being ridden by Mrs Quantock’s daughter, Caroline, and together they won four ribbons and a challenge cup at the Ashburton Show. Who Dat was then shown 14 times at shows throughout Mid-Canterbury as a brood mare, winning 12 times and being placed second twice. The high spot of her career came when she beat an imported brood mare to win the class. Who Dat had six foals, five of them went to the show ring, and all of them
were prize-winners. Two were supreme champion stallions. Her , colt Ridgeway Minstrel, by the imported Welsh pony Coed Coch Seraph, became the first two-year-old to win a supreme champion stallion award in New Zealand. Who Dat struck trouble foaling and had to be destroyed. Twenty - four hours later her foal also died. He was by the Lilley Brothers imported hackney stallion Marflett, and was a “blue baby,” with two holes in his heart—a disease comparatively unknown among animals.
