Death in Israel
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright)
JERUSALEM, March 7.
Dr Moshe Sneh, chairman of the central committee of the Israeli Communist Party, has died in Jerusalem. The controversial Israeli politician and Knesset (Parliament) member served as the commander of Hagana, the clandestine Jewish underground defence organisation against the British mandatory authorities after World War 11. He drifted from the Right-of-centre Zionist Party to the Left-of-centre Socialist Mapam, before joining the Communists.
Under his leadership the Israeli Communist Party split after the six-day war of 1967; Moscow supported only the Rakah faction, while Dr Sneh’s wing supported the Israeli stand in the Middle East conflict.
The 63-year-old physician and journalist was bom in Poland. He headed the list of men wanted by the British mandatory police for his underground activities.
