AMENITIES APPEAL

It is almost a year since an amenities appeal to raise $lO,OOO for a closed-circuit television system for H.M.N.Z.S. Canterbury was launched but the collection so far is barely half this amount.
Mr L. S. Luxton, president of the Canterbury branch of the Nayy League, which is sponsoring the fund, said yesterday that in the last two weeks an appeal letter went out to about 500 business firms and by yesterday only three cheques were to hand.
Some firms had said they were unable to make a donation as they were already fully committed this year. Mr LUxton has hopes that with only about three months before Canterbury is due at Lyttelton the money will turn up. He said only five councils in the province had not made contributions. No direct approach had been made to the public at large although some such scheme might develop in the near future.
The closed-circuit television system has already been installed in the new s2lm frigate in Britain.
