Opposition to service

A meeting of 20 people from Christian, student and youth groups was held last evening to form the Christchurch branch of the Organisation to Halt Military Service.

“The principal aim of the movement is to work for the repeal of the 1961 National Military Service Act, which requires all males under the age of 19 to register for military service,” said Mr B. Newman, a spokesman for the Christchurch branch of the organisation. O.H.M.S. began in Wellington last month to co-or-dinate the activities of groups and individuals opposed to compulsory military training,” he said.
