‘INCORRECT’ REPORTS
Tennis star’s status
(N.Z Press Association)
CANBERRA, March 8. The South African Lawn Tennis Union today told the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia that reports that the tennis star Miss Evonne Goolagong, an Australian Aborigine, would have to wear an “honorary white” badge if she visited South Africa were entirely incorrect.
The union in a cable to the L.T.A.A. today said: The badges are for the convenience of all—repeat all—competitors and managers to enable them to receive V.I.P. treatment.
It is not obligatory for any to wear the badges. We can only suggest the report was completely twisted.”
The L.T.A.A. president (Mr Wayne Reid) said he would probably telephone Miss Goolagong tonight. “I think the whole thing will now die a natural death,” he said.
