Softballers in Manila

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) MANILA.

New Zealand, which lost, 0-1, to the title-holder, the United States, on Monday, yesterday defeated Japan, 7-0, in the fourth round, for its third victory in the world softball championship. The win avenged New Zealand’s loss to Japan in the 1968 championship at Oklahoma City. K. F. Herlihy again started the pitching and allowed only one runner on base. He was relieved by J. D. Dawson in the sixth innings and Dawson conceded only one hit. New Zealand’s runs were scored by Herlihy (2), W. E. Henderson, P. F. Rogers, C. A. Ward, B. McLean and D. R. Cheyne. They came with one in the first, two in the second, one each in the third and sixth, and two in the seventh. New Zealand suffered its only loss of the series so far, to the Americans.

In a very close game, the United States, represented by Welty Way, of Rapid Falls, lowa, scored the winning run in the sixth innings, through the 21-year-old S. Andrew. Both teams, pre-toumament favourites, had shown brilliant pitching and fielding in the early innings. But at the top of the sixth, with the bases full, R. Sturm, of the United States, connected with a hit, and J. Wench, at third base dashed for home. However, he was promptly put out.

The New Zealand catcher, P. J. Priddey, then threw the ball to first base to get Sturm, while Andrew dashed for home from second. The first baseman, D. P. Sorenson, threw the ball back to Priddey, but Andrew slid in safely. Today, New Zealand will meet the unbeaten Philippines team in what is regarded as one of the decisive matches of the series.

Panin wins-The New Zealander, O. Perun, yesterday scored a 6-1, 7-S win over the Spaniard, J. Gisbert, in the first round of an international tennis tournament at Washington.
