M.P. opposes subdivision
“It is with considerable dismay that I notice that the destruction of the wooded hillside of the Cracroft Wilson estate has already started and that the way has been opened for the commercialisation of this historic and beautiful area,” the member of Parliament for Lyttelton (Mr T. M. McGuigan) said yesterday. “While I am the first to agree that social and housing problems are the major issues which should be confronting authorities at the present time, the conservation of the environment should not be ignored. "The use of this area will not contribute one iota towards overcoming the housing shortage in the areas where it is felt most. “It will not help to eliminate the social problems which are rife at the present time, but will destroy a tremendously valuable asset in our environment,” Mr McGuigan said.
