School librarians
Sir,—As a parent who has worked voluntarily in a secondary school library I certainly agree with the president of the Canterbury Secondary Schools Library Association that if the Department of Education keeps up its present attitude towards the pay and status of
secondary school library assistants there will soon be an acute shortage of trained people to run our school libraries. With the tremendous public interest today in science and technology, these library assistants (who are in charge of the library) must have a thorough knowledge of their job in order to cope with the many inquiries made every day by pupils. Surely the time has come for these capable people to be recognised as vital to our education system and for them to be rewarded accordingly.— Yours, etc., SYMPATHISER, March 6, 1972.
