SHIPPING NEWS Three wives aboard visiting cargo ship
When Shaw Savill's 11,207ton, refrigerated cargo liner Suevic berthed at Cashin Quay astern of the same company's Iberic yesterday morning, she had aboard the wives of the master. Captain R. D. Jones, of Southport, the chief engineer, Mr A. C. Butler, of Gravesend, and the chief steward, Mr S. S. Wheeler, of Southampton.
The three women have made previous trips abroad in the company’s vessels with their husbands. The Suevic, which loaded at west coast ports in Britain, has already visited Wellington and is discharging 2000 tons of general cargo at Lyttelton. She will complete discharging at Port Chalmers and Bluff, and will then load refrigerated and general cargo at Tauranga, Auckland and Wellington, for London, Belfast and Liverpool. Captain Jones said that when the Suevic was about 700 miles from the Leewards Islands the women and crew saw the lights of the 2150-ton Norwegian vessel Jark disappear as the ship founded at night after springing a leak and capsizing. The Suevic picked up a lifeboat with 12 people including the master and a woman. They had abandoned the Jark before she capsized but all were suffering from shock. The Suevie landed the rescued party at Curacao on Christmas Day and they were later flown home to Norway. #
The 26,677-ton Swedish cruise liner Kungsholm is due at Lyttelton at 8 a.m. next Tuesday from Tauranga. She will sail for Wellington at 8 p.m. Bus transport to Christchurch will be provided for the 450 passengers and also for sightseeing round the city. Some passengers will fly to Mount Cook for the day. When the ship arrives, 250 copies of ‘‘The Press” will be sent by the pilot cutter with the Harbourmaster’s permission so that passengers may read with their early breakfast. The Kungsholm will berth at Gladstone Pier.
