Record run by Top Brass

(From Our Own Reporter)

REEFTON. Top Brass, a winner at Westport earlier in the week, won the Archer Memorial Handicap at the Reefton Trotting Club's annual meeting yesterday. Top Brass and his co-back marker, Kaipuke Song, always dominated the race. Kaipuke Song finished third. The time for the two miles, 4min 21sec, was a new track record. The firm favourite. Highland Wedding, broke for no apparent reason before travelling 100 yards. She lost a lot of ground and thereafter trailed the field. Goodvan was the earlier leader from Snowlight and Gay Millie. With a mile to run Gooqvan was still in charge from Gay Millie, but Top Brass had moved up to third place. Top Brass was in charge with a round to go and he stayed in front to the finish. Top Brass won by a length from Gay Millie with Kaipuke Song finishing on for third. Old Timer was half a head away fourth. He was followed in by Sherwood Em, which tired in the run home. The favourite Johnny Kirk, from F. E. Newfield’s Templeton stable, won the Caterers’ Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. concession double, impressively. He was always well placed in the running, following Thunder Again to the home turn. Johnny Kirk then took charge and looked to be in for a comfortable win but had to be shaken up to stall off a strong challenge by Winter Morning, which was three-quarters of a length back. Judy Charles was a length away third with a similar distance to Silver Dollar.
