The road toll
Sir, —The road toll is clearly a matter of national concern. Any effort to reduce the incidence of death and injury attributable to motor vehicles should ■be fostered and encouraged. To this end law enforcement is necessary, but the Ministry of Transport gives too great an emphasis to trivial violations of traffic laws. Meter maids issue traffic offence notices for parking breaches along half-empty streets and traffic officers idle away hours with radar-equipped vehicles searching for the unsuspecting motorists exceeding 30 m.p.h. Greater emphasis is needed on more serious breaches of the traffic laws, together with a contribution aimed at liaison with local authorities on the erection of traffic lights. Many such lights are' hindering traffic flows and there is a need for educational techniques aimed at the slow and provocative
driver, the avoid-the-left driver, and the driver glued to the spot when the lights turn green.—Yours, etc., REASSESSMENT. December 30, 1971.
