Duty on wedding presents

Sir,—lt was my lot recently to clear a mail box for a happy couple who are away on honeymoon. In the mail was a card announcing the expected arrival of a parcel from Britain containing a wedding present The card informed us of value for customs duty $l2, customs duty payable $2.70 and P.O. clearance fee 20c (in addition to adequate postage already paid); Inquiry revealed that duty is paid on value over $lO, i.e. $2.70 on the $2 over allowable amount. This seems hardly reasonable on a gift of this nature.—Yours, etc., B.C.L.

December 2, 1971. [The Collector of Customs (Mr F. O. Spademan) replies: > “Bona fide gifts up to $lO are exempt from duty and sales 1 tax. Where this amount is

exceeded full Customs charges are payable on the wholesale value of the goods. However, it is the practice to assess wedding presents as leniently as possible, and I suggest that your correspondent get in touch with me so that the assessment may be reviewed.”]
