OKINAWA TREATY

Mass protest in Tokyo (N.Z. Press A»*n.—Copyrightl TOKYO, Dec. 1. More than 13 million Japanese industrial workers, doctors and nurses walked off their jobs for periods varying from 30 minutes to 72 hours yesterday to protest against the Okinawa reversion treaty, and to demand larger end-of-year bonuses. The treaty has been passed by the House of Representatives, and it stands to be automatically ratified by December 24 whether the House of Councillors acts on it or not.

The workers also joined a rally- of 20,000 people in Yoyogi Park, in western Tokyo, sponsored by the Japan Socialist and Japan Communist Parties. The rally was followed by street demonstrations. The demonstrators protested against the Okinawa treaty because it sanctions the continued presence of United States military bases on the island, and they called for the resignation of the Prime Minister (Mr Sato) and his Government.
