Offensives in Vietnam

(N.Z. Preet Assn.—Copyright) SAIGON, December 1. Supported by United States aircraft, 57,000 South Vietnamese troops are advancing in three dry-season spoiling offensives, but only minor patrol clashes have been reported so far on the three fronts—in the Central Highlands, along Highway No. 7 in eastern Cambodia, and in the Lower Mekong Delta. The latest offensive disclosed is an infantry and armoured push in the western provinces of Kontum and Pleiku, along Cambodia’s north-eastern frontier. 260 miles north-east of Saigon. Its aim is to halt two North Vietnamese infantry regiments and an artillery regiment said to be moving from base camps in Cambodia across the border into South Vietnam’s Central Highlands.
