PICTURE MIX-UP
Aboriginal activist The man shown in a photograph on the front page of “The Press” last Thursday, and erroneously described as the American solo pilot, Captain E. Long, was an Aboriginal activist, Dennis Walker, who arrived at Sydney Airport the same day. The error occurred when a photographic agency cabled “The Press” the wrong picture from Sydney. Mr Walker is aged 24, and is the son of the Aboriginal poet, Kath Walker. He is a former seaman and a former secretary of the National Tribal Council, and was one of the leaders of an Aboriginal Rights protest march in Brisbane on November 23. Mr Walker had flown to Sydney for a television debate with an Aboriginal Senator, Senator N. Bonner. The Brisbane protest was against a bill, now before the Queensland Parliament, which would extend the control of tribal and reserve councils. Mr Walker says he and his fellow protesters want the Aboriginals themselves to control the sBm a year which is funded to the Australian Department of Aboriginal Affairs. A photograph of the real Captain Long, who is aged 44 and has been an airline pilot for 25 years, was published in “The Press” last Friday.
