‘More ships needed’
New Zealand mutt offer the West Indies a better shipping service if the meat trade were to expand, Mr A. Griffiths, of Thomas Borthwick and Sons (A’asia), Ltd, said bn his return from the West Indies where he made a survey of the market. There were only two ships, the Port Sydney and the Cedric servicing one of New Zealand’s biggest beef markets, said Mr Griffiths. He hsd been disturbed to hesr of the number of places which had run out of New Zealand pieat.
Part of this might be attributed to the present service every seven weeks which left too great a gap between the customer’s order and delivery. This led to customers “under buying." New Zealand had shipped 13,000 tons of beef to the West Indies in the last 12 months. So it was a market which could not be disregarded. If there were a third vessel on the run to give a monthly service, it would be a great help to exporters, added Mr Griffiths.
