GRAPES BY AIR AGAIN

A second consignment of grapes air-freighted from California by Fruit Distributors, Ltd, arrived at Christchurch Airport late on Monday afternoon; within an hour the 900 “lugs” for the South Island had been unloaded and the aircraft had left for Auckland. The local representative of the importing firm (Mr B. V. Porter), said that the grapes would be auctioned. He expected the market price to be staliar to that—up to $1.50 per lb—when air-freighted Californian grapes were available early last month. About 3000 “lugs” of grapes—cartons containing about 301bs—-were on board the “stretched” DCS aircraft of the Flying Tiger Line. Nine hundred of these containers were unloaded at Christchurch for distribution throughout the South Island. No further consignments are expected before Christmas. Normally Californian grapes imported to this country are transported by ship, but the protracted longshoremen’s- strike in the United States has affected this.
