TROTTING Bella’s Command is fancied tonight

‘The Press’ 1 Special Service

AUCKLAND.

Bella’s Command, one of whose owners is the wife of the president of the Auckland Trotting Club (Mr M. M. N. Corner), will have one of his last chances at Claudelands tonight of being in the running for a place in this year’s Auckland Trotting Cup field.

He is on a difficult mark, 48 yards, but he has only seven opponents and none of them in the last month or so has shown anything like comparable form. It seems certain Bella’s Command will be a pronounced favourite.

At Alexandra Park last Tuesday, Bella’s Command scored decisively from a field that included Young Cardigan, Scottish Warrior, Birdie Hanover, and Via Veneto. This performance followed an unlucky third to Miss Debra and Scottish Warrior on the first night of the Franklin Club’s meeting. Bella’s Command has made splendid progress since and, as he is beginning much better these days, he should soon be handily placed. Faye Bingen and Blue Dawn look like providing the main opposition, although Three Jacks, in anything like his old form, would be a threat.

Faye Bingen has had only one race at a totalisator meeting this season. That was on the second night of the Franklin meeting in the race won by Bella’s Command. She showed plenty of dash and led to the home turn. The race is bound to have improved her. Faye Bingen has previously shown fine form at Claudelands, where the turning track suits her front-running style. Blue Dawn has been disappointing lately, but she has not had much luck in the running. A stout stayer, she has shown most of her best form on left-handed tracks. Three Jacks showed outstanding form as a two and three-year-old, but he then suffered recurrent soreness and, as a four-year-old, was able to start only three times. He won one of his only three races in the following season, only to break down again. The last time he raced was in November, 1969.

A bold run at a matinee meeting at Claudelands last Thursday, however, showed he was standing up well to another preparation. Sonola looks a fine prospect for the second leg, the W. A. Craddock Pace. He has scored impressively at his last two starts and looks to be improving all the time. Eden All, the Red RebelBeau Frost combination, and

Successful meeting

Substantial increases were recorded in both on and offcourse betting at the Geraldine Trotting Club's annual meeting on Saturday. On-course betting rose by $9454 to $85,386, and offcourse, the total was $172,433.50 —an increase of $50,688.50.

The attendance was one of the largest at the course, and this resulted in long queues in front of the totalisator. Other facilities on the course were also over-crowded.
