Payton to captain
(N.Z. Press Association) NAPIER. The Wairarapa opening batsman, D. Payton, has been appointed captain of the Central Districts’ cricket team to play Wellington in a one-day match at Lower Hutt next Sunday. Payton takes over the captaincy from B. Congdon, who is now the Wellington skipper. Payton has never previously captained Central Districts, but has been the skipper of numerous trials teams.
The following side was announced by the selectors, Messrs B. Spooner (chairman). G. Rowe and I. Wilson:— Payton, H. Sampson (Taranaki), M. Shrimpton (Hawke’s Bay), M. Baker (Hawke’s Bay), R. Pierce (Nelson), K. Wadsworth (Nelson), B. Furlong (Hawke’s Bay), M. Brooks (Manawatu), A B. Jordan (Taranaki), J. Howell (Hawke’s Bay), R. Fills (Hawke’s Bay) and D. Neal (Marlborough). B. Yulle was unavailable, but would be considered for the Plunket Shield team, which will be announced next Monday.
