M. G. Burgess, named captain of the Auckland cricket team to meet Northern Districts at Eden Park next Sunday in the first national knock-out match, may not be able to playBurgess, aged 27, will take over the captaincy from J. “I am seeing my doctor tomorrow and will be in a better position then to judge,” Burgess said yesterday. ”1 haven't been able to exercise on it since I twisted the ankle bowling in Grafton’s centenary match a week ago.” Burgess, a test regular for the last four seasons, said it was a bit of a shock being named captain. He said he had not considered it at any stage. Burgess has led Grafton for the last two seasons. It won the senior championship last season, and is a clear lea-

der in the present contest for the title. He has had experience in Brabin and Rothmans level in leadership. Burgess had strong competition for the captaincy from two other club skippers —R. W. Morgan (Parnell) and G. Vivian (Cornwall).

Thirteen names were handed to ’Mr K. Jagger, the chairman of the Auckland Cricket Association, by the selectors. Messrs A. Clark (convener), G. Gedye, and T. Timpson. These are:— Burgess (Grafton, captain), Morgan (Parnell, vice-captain), R. Redmond (Cornwall), R. Harris (Papatoetoe), Vivian (Cornwall), T. Jarvis (Parnell), R. Dykes (University), J. Mclntyre (Grafton), H. Howarth (Suburbs), R. Baddeley (Cornwall), N. Smith (Grafton), J. Williams (Grafton), W. Fenton (Cornwall).

The Northern Districts team is:—
