ADELAIDE. The former test off-spinner, A. Mallett, ripped through the Victorian batting line-up to give South Australia victory by 199 runs with one session to spare in the Sheffield Shield match at the Adelaide Oval yesterday.
The stockily - built Mallett was instrumental in Victoria’s sensational loss of eight secondinnings wickets for 64 runs. South Australia scored 426 for nine declared against Victoria’s 283 and 156. The Victorian captain, W. M. Lawry carried his bat for 69 —the second successive first-class match in which he has been unbeaten. In Perth a week ago,he was 116 not out in the shield match against Western Australia. Mallett strengthened his test claim by taking five wickets for 46 and received good support from a parttime bowler, D. Sutherland, who took four for 45.
At one stage, Victoria was 127 for three and seemingly set to play out time. Then Mallett struck, taking four wickets without conceding a run in 12 balls. In a dramatic crash Victoria lost six wickets for 10 runs with the emotionless Lawry hanging on grimly. Lawry batted . for 230 minutes and hit nine fours in his laborious, innings. The most impressive Victorian batsman was the 19-year-old opener, G. Cosier, who hit the ball powerfully and with assurance to score 34 before being bowled by a long hop from Sutherland.
Speed skating.—Miss A. Henning did a time of 42.65ec in the women’s 500 metres speed skating event and equalled the unofficial world record she established in Inzell, West Germany, a few days ago.
