Blanket sale criticised

(N.Z. Press Association)

HAMILTON, Nov. 29.

It was surprising that Government surplus blankets should have been up for tender at the height of the East Pakistani refugee appeal for blankets, said the WaikatoBay of Plenty chairman of C.0.R.5.0. (Dr W. G. Whittlestone) today.

An advertisement in a Wellington newspaper early this month called for tenders for 362 single blankets. Tenders closed and the blankets were sold on November 15. Dr Whittlestone said the advertisement had been a typical case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand was doing. Tendering of the blankets had probably been the result of normal Government machinery.

“While the recent appeal was aimed at raising money to buy blankets in India for the refugees, our organisation could have probably tendered for the blankets at a cut price,” he said. Dr Whittlestone said he thought it would be a fine gesture if the Government were to give useful surplus goods to aid organisations.
