OPPOSITION TO TESTS
N.Z. statement in U.N.
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, Nov. 28.
New Zealand said in the United Nations that it was opposed to all nuclear testing by all nations, and that the nuclear powers had a duty to agree soon on a nuclear test ban treaty. The New Zealand Ambassador (Mr J. V. Scott), said to the General Assembly’s main political committee, “What New Zealanders and Pacific Islanders, and what the majority of the people of our world want to hear, is that there will be no more nuclear weapons testing, no more nuclear radiation from which no possible benefit flows.
"Nothing less than suspension of atmospheric testing, given the potential hazard to health which it constitutes, would be an adequate response from all Governments concerned.” <
The New Zealand- Government urged most strongly—especially in view of a very recent test—that there be an end to all atmospheric testing, he said. China set off a test explosion earlier this month.
