Fruit rise “too little”

(N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, Nov. 29. The higher price to be paid to apple and pear growers for the 1970-71 season was welcome relief but it would not cover increased costs, said the president of the Fruitgrowers’ Federation (Mr P. K. McCliskie, of Nelson) today. The Apple and Pear Prices Authority met in Wellington on Thursday and the chairman (Mr R. M. Richardson) has announced that the price will rise from 101.85 c to 106 c a bushel. The authority had power to increase the price by a maximum of 5 per cent a bushel. Mr McCliskie said that the rise was the first since November, 1969. “The increase is welcome but even with it fruitgrowers are still a long way behind where they were two years ago. The increase will cover only 25 per cent of increased costs of the last two years,” he said. Labour costs had increased 5c a bushel during the 1969-70 season, and 13c a bushel during the last season.
